The "Sweet Home Columbus" program will launch officially Nov. 1, 2024, offering eligible first-time homebuyers in Muscogee County a chance to receive up to $30,000 in zero-interest loans toward purchasing their first home.
The initiative, introduced by the Community Reinvestment Department, aims to make homeownership more accessible for low-to-moderate-income residents in the area.
"This is important for the Columbus community because the American Dream of home ownership has long been one of the fastest ways for households to establish generational wealth," said Community Reinvestment Director Rob Scott. "This particular program will allow those marginalized, vulnerable populations who earn under 80 percent of the area median income to have an opportunity to experience, enjoy and embrace the American Dream of home ownership."
The program targets residents who meet specific income requirements and are eager to invest in their first homes within Muscogee County. Department officials hope this program will foster community growth and stability by encouraging homeownership.
"I am new to the area. When I heard about this opportunity, I nearly cried," said Columbus local Jazmine Philips. "I think this will definitely help with the affordable housing issue here in Columbus."
Applications for Sweet Home Columbus will open on Friday, and interested residents are encouraged to learn more about the program's eligibility requirements and benefits by visiting the Community Reinvestment Department's website.
