Ohio River South partner brings decades of political experience and public service to discussion of changing electoral landscape
With the political landscape continuing to evolve in Muscogee County, understanding the shifting voting patterns of local precincts has become increasingly important in assessing the direction of future elections.
Few individuals bring more experience and insight to that conversation than Karl Douglass, a partner with Ohio River South, a bipartisan government relations, lobbying and public affairs firm headquartered in Atlanta.
A longtime political strategist and advocate with decades of experience throughout the Southeast, Douglass has developed extensive relationships with elected officials, government leaders and public-sector decision-makers, particularly in Middle and South Georgia.
His political experience includes advising several of Georgia's most prominent elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, former Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and longtime state Rep. Calvin Smyre, who served as dean of the Georgia House of Representatives.
Beyond his work in political strategy and government relations, Douglass has maintained an active presence in Columbus civic affairs. He previously chaired the city's Planning Advisory Commission and Water Commission and currently serves on the Downtown Development Authority.
Before entering politics, Douglass spent 14 years as a corporate officer with Columbus-based Aflac, serving as second vice president and director of producer licensing. In that position, he oversaw the business unit responsible for contract administration and licensing insurance associates throughout the United States.
A Georgia native, Douglass earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a master's degree in education from the University of Georgia.
At Ohio River South, Douglass is part of a firm that works to connect businesses, organizations and communities with government leadership and public policy opportunities. The firm's mission centers on helping clients navigate complex challenges, influence policy decisions and advance economic and community development throughout the American South.
That combination of corporate leadership, public service and political experience provides Douglass with a perspective on the changing dynamics of elections in Columbus and Muscogee County.
As local elections reveal shifts in voter participation, precinct-level support and political alliances, the results raise important questions about the changing electorate, the influence of neighborhood demographics and what those trends could mean for future candidates.
The Courier Eco Latino Newspaper spoke with Douglass about the shifting political landscape in Muscogee County, examining how voting patterns have changed across precincts, what those changes reveal about the electorate and the potential implications for future local and statewide elections.
