The Courier Eco Latino Endorses Becca Zajac in District 7 Runoff

Throughout this election season, The Courier Eco Latino Newspaper has followed a consistent approach in evaluating candidates seeking public office: meet with the candidates, listen to their vision, review their records of service and accomplishment, and determine which individual is best prepared to represent the interests of the community.

Candidates who accepted our invitation were given the opportunity to discuss their priorities, answer questions, and share their plans for addressing the issues facing voters. We listened carefully, asked challenging questions, and considered each candidate's responses before reaching our conclusions.

In the District 7 race, both candidates participated in the public forum hosted by The Courier Eco Latino Newspaper and Davis Broadcasting, Inc. However, Becca Zajac also met with this publication and several respected community leaders for an extensive face-to-face discussion regarding the needs, concerns, and expectations of District 7 residents. Laketha Ashe declined to participate in similar meetings. Consequently, our evaluation of her candidacy was limited primarily to information available through public statements, campaign materials, her website, and social media platforms.

After reviewing the candidates' backgrounds, records of accomplishment, and positions on issues affecting the district, we believe Becca Zajac is the stronger choice to serve as the next representative for District 7 on the Columbus Council.

During our discussions, we sought clarity regarding leadership philosophy, governance priorities, constituent engagement, and accountability. Based on those conversations, we are confident that Zajac understands the importance of independent leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and responsiveness to the residents she seeks to represent.

At the same time, our endorsement should not be viewed as a blank check. The Courier Eco Latino Newspaper does not offer endorsements lightly, nor do we consider them permanent guarantees of support. Public officials must continually earn the trust of the people they serve through transparency, accessibility, sound judgment, and a demonstrated commitment to their constituents.

Should she be elected, we will continue to watch, listen, ask questions, and hold Becca Zajac—as we do all elected officials—accountable on behalf of District 7 residents, including the district's 61 percent Black majority population, and the broader community she will serve.

With that understanding, and with a commitment to continued oversight and accountability, The Courier Eco Latino Newspaper endorses Becca Zajac for Columbus City Council District 7.
