Columbus Police Prepare for Protests and Packed Weekend Downtown
Columbus officials are preparing for a busy weekend in the Uptown district, where several high-profile events and at least two
Three teenagers have been arrested and charged in connection with a deadly double shooting that occurred at Avalon Apartments on Cusseta Road, leaving one man dead and another injured, Columbus police confirmed this week.
The Columbus Police Department identified 33-year-old Chastin Hunter as the deceased victim. He was found with gunshot wounds on May 5 around 2:39 p.m. and later died at Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital at 5:32 p.m., according to police. A second male victim, who arrived separately at the hospital, remains in stable condition.
On June 10, 16-year-old Kadin Mabry was arrested on outstanding warrants and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and criminal attempt armed robbery. Police had previously arrested 17-year-old Anthony Pollard, Jr., and 69-year-old Eugene Mabry, who is also facing multiple felony charges including murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery.
“This is heartbreaking,” said Tara Jenkins, who lives two blocks away from the Avalon Apartments. “These are kids. It feels like our young people just don’t see another path.”
Police say the suspects were identified through witness statements and investigative leads. The Kia Soul allegedly used during the crime was located on Hawaii Way. A search warrant at the location led to additional evidence being recovered.
“More arrests are pending. Anyone with information is still encouraged to contact Sgt. D. Baker.” said the Columbus Police Department in a statement.
Pollard and Eugene Mabry were both scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court on Wednesday, May 7, while Kadin Mabry is set for a preliminary hearing on Friday, June 13, at 8 a.m.
Columbus resident Darryl Lawson called the shooting a “wake-up call.”
“We’ve got to show these boys something different. If nobody steps in, this cycle will just keep spinning.”
