There is an old saying that has survived generation after generation because it carries a timeless truth: Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note. Today is cash in your hand.
Too many of us spend our lives tripping over what is behind us. We replay old mistakes, revisit old disappointments, relive broken relationships, and rehearse failures that God has already forgiven. We keep trying to cash a check that has already been stamped "Paid in Full." Yesterday cannot be changed. It cannot be rewritten. It cannot be relived. The only thing yesterday should do is teach us—not trap us.
Then there are those who spend all their time worrying about tomorrow. Tomorrow is nothing more than a promise. None of us has been guaranteed another sunrise. We make plans, set goals, and dream dreams, but only God knows what tomorrow holds because He already holds tomorrow.
But today... today is different. Today is cash in your hand. It is the only day you can spend. It is the only opportunity you can invest. It is the only moment in which you can love, forgive, encourage, pray, serve, laugh, build, and become everything God created you to be.
God has already placed something in your hands today. He has given you another breath, another opportunity, another chance to make a difference. Don't waste today's blessing crying over yesterday's burdens or worrying about tomorrow's uncertainties. Use what God has placed in your hands right now.
Moses had a staff. David had a sling. The little boy had five loaves and two fish. None of them had everything they wanted, but each used what God had already provided, and God multiplied it into something miraculous.
The same God who blessed them is still blessing us. So stop tripping over what is behind you. Lift your head. Strengthen your faith. Empty your hands of regret so God can fill them with purpose. And when this journey is over—when you've spent every ounce of today's grace—you'll be able to look back over your life and testify with tears in your eyes and gratitude in your heart: "If it had not been for the Lord who was on my side, where would I be?"
Not because every day was easy. Not because every prayer was answered the way you wanted. Not because every door opened. But because through every valley, every storm, every setback, every heartbreak, and every victory, God never left your side.
So spend today's cash wisely. Invest it in your purpose. Pour it into your family. Share it with your community. Use it to glorify God. Because yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't promised, but today is a gift.
That's why they call it the present.
