Dr. Cathy Cook Sworn In as Columbus' Newest Citywide Councilor

Before a standing-room-only crowd of supporters, family members and sorority sisters, Dr. Cathy Cook was sworn in Tuesday as Columbus' newest citywide councilor, marking the beginning of what she called a new chapter of public service.

Superior Court Judge Benjamin Richardson administered the oath of office during the Columbus Council meeting as Cook officially assumed the District 9 at-large seat.

Cook, a Columbus dentist and political newcomer, won the June runoff election over appointed incumbent John Anker. Anker had served in the position for the past 16 months after being appointed to fill the vacancy created when longtime Councilor Judy Thomas resigned in early 2025 because of health concerns.

Because Cook won the special election, she will complete the remainder of Thomas' unexpired term through the end of 2026 before beginning a full four-year term in January 2027.

Following the ceremony, Cook described the occasion as both humbling and historic.

"You know, it's the beginning of a journey," Cook said. "It's the beginning of my political career. I'm excited, elated and I'm so humble. What it means to me is that I get to contribute to the incredible history of Columbus, and I get to stand on the shoulders of some great leaders who have come before me. I get to serve the people of Columbus in a great way, and I'm excited about this opportunity to grow, learn and lead."

Addressing those gathered in the council chambers, Cook reflected on the legacy of community leaders who paved the way for her service.

"I follow in the footsteps of many who have come before me who are great in this community," she said. "And I sit alongside great leaders who will work together to govern this city."

Cook also acknowledged the influence of civic leaders such as A.J. McClung and said she intends to remain grounded in her faith while serving the community.

Cook's arrival continues a period of significant transition for Columbus city government. She joins newly elected District 1 Councilor Simi Barnes on the council, while Mayor-elect Hugley and two additional newly elected council members are scheduled to take office in January, signaling a new era of leadership at City Hall.

With a packed council chamber and enthusiastic supporters looking on, Cook's swearing-in reflected both the community's excitement and the changing political landscape in Columbus as the city prepares for a new administration in 2027.
