Congressman Bishop Mourns Passing of Civil Rights Icon Rev. Jesse Jackson

U.S. Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr. (D-GA) released a heartfelt statement Tuesday following the passing of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, calling him a lifelong champion of justice whose influence reshaped American politics and the struggle for equality.

Bishop said he and his wife, Vivian, were “deeply saddened” to learn of Jackson’s death, describing the longtime activist as a “friend of longstanding” and an iconic figure in the fight for civil and human rights.

“Through his life’s work as an iconic activist for civil and human rights and his leadership of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he was pivotal in creating a diverse coalition in the epic struggle to assure that America’s freedoms, justice, and opportunity were enjoyed by all,” Bishop said.

Jackson, founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, was widely recognized for building multiracial alliances focused on economic empowerment, voting rights, and social justice. His presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988 marked historic milestones, making him one of the most prominent African American candidates to seek the nation’s highest office.

Bishop noted that Jackson’s historic run for president inspired generations “to keep hope alive” — a phrase that became synonymous with Jackson’s message of perseverance and civic engagement.

“His historic run for President inspired generations to keep hope alive and to fight for a more perfect union where life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not hollow words but rather the lived opportunity for all Americans,” Bishop said.

Jackson’s decades of activism stretched from his early involvement in the civil rights movement alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to his leadership in economic boycotts, international diplomacy efforts, and advocacy for marginalized communities. His influence extended beyond politics into faith communities and grassroots organizing nationwide.

Bishop concluded his statement by extending condolences to Jackson’s family and all who mourn his passing.

“We extend our sincere condolences to his family and all who mourn his loss,” Bishop said. “But we thank God for his exemplary life of servant leadership for the betterment of humanity.”

Jackson’s legacy, Bishop added, will endure through the generations of leaders and activists inspired by his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and hope.
