Columbus State University is dishing out a piece of local culinary history on Thursday, May 1, with a 50-foot scrambled dog and a hot dog-eating contest as part of its year-long 50th anniversary celebration.
The festivities, hosted by the university’s Archives & Special Collections, will begin at 10:30 a.m. with food preparations at the Whitley Clock Tower Greenspace on the university’s main campus. The massive scrambled dog will be served at 12:30 p.m., followed by a newly added hot dog-eating contest at 1 p.m., featuring 10 selected students, alumni and employees.
The event celebrates the scrambled dog, a dish closely associated with Columbus culinary culture and dating back to the early 20th century. Local legend Firm Roberts is credited with its origin, and the dish gained fame through iconic local eateries like Dinglewood Pharmacy.
Scott Ressmeyer, co-owner of Country’s Barbecue and a longtime advocate of Columbus tradition, will oversee preparation of the dish. Ressmeyer and his Miracle Riders motorcycle group are scheduled to depart the next day on a 9,500-mile journey through 34 states to raise funds for Columbus State’s School of Nursing.
The May 1 event is part of the Archives’ monthly spotlight on regional history, which has included genealogy workshops, lectures and behind-the-scenes exhibits. The celebration will culminate later this year with a public birthday event in November and a formal dinner in December.
Columbus State’s Archives & Special Collections, located in the Simon Schwob Memorial Library, maintains more than 500 historical collections and millions of documents and artifacts. The archive is open to the public on weekdays and offers limited volunteer opportunities for those interested in historical preservation.
