Columbus Police Report Over 200 Arrests in 30-Day Operation Targeting Summer Crime

The Columbus Police Department announced Wednesday the completion of Operation Overlook, a 30-day crime reduction initiative that resulted in more than 200 arrests, the confiscation of 32 firearms, and a reported drop in major crime citywide.

The operation, which ran from May 13 through June 12, aimed to curb criminal activity during the start of summer break—a time police say often coincides with a rise in violent crime.

According to data released by the department, officers made 7,773 citizen contacts during the initiative. Of those, 206 resulted in arrests, including 11 individuals identified as gang members. Authorities filed 144 felony and 273 misdemeanor charges, and cleared 236 outstanding warrants.

In addition to arrests, officers issued 1,144 citations and 1,296 warnings, confiscated 32 firearms, and issued more than 50 principal summons. Officers also addressed numerous city ordinance violations.

The department credited the initiative with contributing to a 30% decline in Part 1 crimes—such as murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and auto theft—compared to the same time period last year.

“Sworn personnel from all areas of the department took part, working extended hours and focusing on proactive efforts across the city,” officials stated. “Officers increased their presence in neighborhoods, focused on known problem areas, and made direct contact with thousands of citizens.”

Police Chief Stoney Mathis praised the collaborative effort and said the department remains committed to continuing crime reduction efforts.

“The Columbus Police Department remains committed to building on this progress and continuing efforts to keep the city safe,” the department said in a statement.

Operation Overlook is part of the department’s ongoing strategy to increase public safety through visibility, warrant enforcement, and direct community engagement.
