COLUMBUS, Ga. — The LGBTQ+ community in Columbus is facing a significant challenge following the arrest of Jeremy Hobbs, founder and president of COLGAY Pride, on drug and gun charges. The incident has sent shockwaves through the organization, prompting a swift response from its members.
In the aftermath of Hobbs' arrest, COLGAY Pride's Communications Director, Harry Underwood, addressed the community's concerns and outlined the organization’s plans for moving forward.
"We are deeply shocked and disappointed by the news," Underwood said. "However, it is crucial that we separate the actions of one individual from the mission and values of our organization."
Underwood emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the organization's efforts to rebuild. He stated that the organization is committed to involving the community in the rebuilding process to ensure a thorough and community-focused approach.
This includes developing a strategic plan that incorporates feedback from community members and advocating for a non-discrimination ordinance in Columbus to protect the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
The organization also is seeking legal advice on how to reorganize the nonprofit and address financial transparency issues that have arisen.
"Our goal is to maintain the trust and support of the community," Underwood said. "We need to communicate changes and progress clearly to keep our supporters informed and engaged."
During a recent meeting, speakers discussed the need for transformation and sustainability within the organization. This includes involving more people in leadership roles and being transparent about decision-making processes.
The organization plans to continue providing services and resources to the LGBTQ+ community in Columbus, with a renewed focus on addressing financial issues and ensuring community support. Despite the recent setback, COLGAY Pride remains committed to its mission of advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and providing a safe and inclusive space for all.
Action items identified by the organization include developing a strategic plan for the future, registering to advocate for the non-discrimination ordinance with the city council, and seeking community input on past mistakes and future strategies. Additionally, the organization is exploring the possibility of a name change and implementing a new code of conduct to reinforce its commitment to transparency and accountability.
"Our community has faced challenges before, and we will face this one with resilience and determination," Underwood said. "Together, we will rebuild and continue to fight for equality and justice for all."
