A Wednesday Conversation with Author José R. Quiñones

Author of Stepping into Leadership: Leading with Meaning

Leadership is often defined by titles, positions, or authority. But according to author and leadership coach José R. Quiñones, true leadership begins long before someone is given a title—it begins with purpose, service, and intentional growth.

Quiñones is the founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Impulse Leadership and the author of Stepping into Leadership: Leading with Meaning. A highly decorated military veteran and nationally recognized leadership expert, he has dedicated his career to helping individuals and organizations discover what it means to lead with authenticity and impact.

In this edition of Wednesday Conversation, Quiñones shares his leadership philosophy, the inspiration behind his book, and why meaningful leadership matters now more than ever.

Courier: José, tell our readers a little about yourself and your journey into leadership development.

Quiñones: My leadership journey began in the military, where I learned that leadership isn't about rank—it's about responsibility. Throughout my career, I had the privilege of training and mentoring soldiers from diverse backgrounds, and I realized that the principles of great leadership are universal. They apply whether you're leading a military unit, a business, a nonprofit, or your own family. Today, as the founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Impulse Leadership, my mission is to help people discover their potential and lead with confidence, purpose, and integrity.

Courier: What inspired you to write Stepping into Leadership: Leading with Meaning?

Quiñones: I wanted to write a book that focused on the heart of leadership rather than simply the mechanics of management. Too many people believe leadership begins when they're promoted. I believe leadership begins the moment you choose to influence others positively. This book encourages readers to become intentional about the legacy they're creating every day.

Courier: Your book emphasizes "leading with meaning." What does that phrase mean to you?

Quiñones: Leading with meaning means understanding that every decision, every conversation, and every action has an impact on other people. Leadership isn't about being in charge. It's about taking care of the people in your charge. When your leadership is rooted in purpose instead of ego, people trust you, follow you, and grow alongside you.

Courier: How has your military career influenced your leadership philosophy?

Quiñones: The military taught me discipline, accountability, adaptability, and servant leadership. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my life. Receiving the Master Army Instructor Badge and being recognized as Service Member of the Year were tremendous honors, but the greatest reward has always been watching others develop into leaders themselves. Leadership is multiplied when you intentionally invest in someone else's success.

Courier: You have an impressive educational background. How has that shaped your work?

Quiñones: Education has allowed me to combine practical experience with research-based leadership strategies. I earned my master’s degree in organizational leadership along with graduate certificates in Life Coaching, Neuroleadership, Leadership & Logistics, and became a certified MindSonar Professional because I believe leaders should never stop learning. The more we understand how people think, communicate, and make decisions, the more effective we become as leaders.

Courier: Many people believe leadership is reserved for executives and managers. Do you agree?

Quiñones: Not at all. Leadership begins wherever influence begins. Parents are leaders. Teachers are leaders. Coaches, pastors, volunteers, and community advocates are leaders. You don't need permission to lead—you simply need the willingness to serve and positively influence others.

Courier: What is the biggest mistake you see aspiring leaders make?

Quiñones: Waiting. Many people wait until they receive a promotion before they begin acting like leaders. Great leaders prepare before the opportunity arrives. Leadership isn't something you're handed. It's something you practice every single day.

Courier: Community service seems to be an important part of your mission. Why?

Quiñones: Leadership should never exist in isolation. One of the things I'm most passionate about is providing free workshops for community leaders and Latino families. When we invest in people, entire communities become stronger. Leadership is not just about personal success—it's about creating opportunities for others to succeed.

Courier: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

Quiñones: I hope they realize leadership is accessible to everyone. I want readers to leave believing they already possess the ability to make a difference. My hope is that the book inspires them to become intentional leaders who lead with character, compassion, and courage.

Courier: Finally, what advice would you give someone who wants to become a better leader today?

Quiñones: Start by leading yourself. Be consistent. Be accountable. Keep learning. Listen more than you speak. Invest in people. Stay humble. Leadership isn't measured by how many people work for you. It's measured by how many lives are better because you chose to lead.
