A View From A Pew: “Let Me Be Here”

There’s something we need to get right in the house of God—and we need to get it right now. We’ve got to make room… not just for praise, but for people. Real people. People who walk in carrying more than a Bible. People carrying grief. Questions. Disappointment. Silence. Even anger with God.

And do me a favor please? Stop judging folks who don’t worship like you. Stop measuring somebody’s relationship with God by how loud they shout, how high they jump, how long they stand, or how hard they clap. Because everybody in the pew ain’t in the same place.

There may be a Martha on your row—busy, burdened, trying to hold it all together. And there may be a Mary in your section—sitting still, soaking in a moment, trying to understand a God she loves but doesn’t fully comprehend right now. And both of them belong.

Somebody is in church not with a hallelujah—but with a “Lord, I don’t understand.” Somebody didn’t lift their hands because they’re tired. Somebody didn’t open their mouth because if they did, tears would come out instead of praise.

But hear me…The authenticity of your worship is not proven by your volume—it’s proven by your presence.

You showed up. You could’ve stayed home. You could’ve walked away. You could’ve given up on God all together but you showed up. You were still there.

And sometimes, “I’m still here” is the highest praise a broken heart can give. Because if Jesus makes room for sorrow… If Jesus makes room for questions… If Jesus makes room for silence… Then who are we to shut the door on somebody else’s process?

The house of God ought to be the one place where people don’t have to perform to belong. Where you don’t have to fake a smile to fit in. Where you can sit in your struggle and still feel His presence.

So the next time you look down your pew and see somebody quiet… Don’t judge them. Pray for them. Make space for them. Love them. Because one day, you might be the one sitting there… trying to hold on with everything you’ve got.

And when that day comes…You won’t need judgment. You’ll need grace.

And the truth is—we all do.
