The Greater Columbus Fair will not be held this year as city officials work to secure a new vendor, but
For more than two decades, the West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition (WCGCC) has been at the forefront of cancer education, prevention, and advocacy throughout the region.
Founded on June 29, 2001, as the “Columbus Collaborative,” the coalition—now led by President and CEO Cheryl Johnson—has evolved into a trusted community partner dedicated to empowering residents to make healthier lifestyle choices, navigating patients through the healthcare system, and connecting families with critical resources such as free and low-cost cancer screenings.
“Our mission has always been clear,” Johnson said. “We want to prevent cancer before it starts, detect it earlier when it is most treatable, and ensure that everyone in our region—regardless of income or background—has access to quality care and information.”
Over the years, the coalition has launched numerous initiatives aimed at reducing cancer disparities, including the Community Health Advisors program, cancer screening and navigation services, and comprehensive education and outreach efforts.
These programs have grown through strategic planning and the unwavering support of the organization’s board of directors. Through partnerships with local, state, and national agencies, WCGCC’s impact continues to expand. The coalition has received multiple awards, grants, and corporate support in recognition of its innovative community-based approach.
The organization’s commitment to community engagement continues with its signature annual event—the 16th Annual Paint the Town Pink 5K Fun Run/Walk—set for Friday, October 17, 2025. The event raises awareness for breast cancer prevention and celebrates survivors, families, and advocates who stand together in the fight against cancer.
“We’re not just painting the town pink,” Johnson said. “We’re painting a picture of hope, resilience, and unity.”
The West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition continues to focus on five key goals:
· Prevent cancer and detect existing cancers earlier.
· Improve access to quality care across the region.
· Save more lives through education and early detection.
· Train future cancer researchers and caregivers.
· Educate the community about cancer prevention and awareness.
