A local volunteer’s vision to expose high school students to opportunity and higher education pathways took center stage during the 2026 UNCF Columbus Mayor’s Masked Ball.

Dominic Overton, a volunteer with UNCF Columbus, led an effort to ensure students from the Muscogee County School District were included in the signature fundraising gala. His goal was to provide students with firsthand exposure to successful professionals, scholarship opportunities and the mission of the United Negro College Fund.

“I just didn’t think that information was getting to the children,” Overton said. “This was about showing them what’s possible and helping them see a future that includes college and opportunity.”

Overton partnered with Carver High School Principal Lacoya Day to identify students who exemplify leadership, character and potential. Initially selecting 20 students, the effort expanded to include 30 students, supported by the purchase of three tables at the event.

Recognizing that many of the students had never attended a formal gala, Overton coordinated additional community support to ensure they were prepared for the experience. He worked with Men’s Wearhouse to secure discounts on formal attire, while Reed Jewelers at Peachtree Mall partnered with him to provide engraved watches for each student.

Each timepiece, customized with “UNCF” on the back, was intended to serve as a lasting reminder of the evening and the possibilities ahead.

“A mind is a terrible thing to waste. It’s a wonderful thing to invest in, but the time is now,” Overton said, explaining the symbolism behind the watches.

Students arrived dressed appropriately, on time and conducted themselves with poise throughout the evening, organizers said, describing the initiative as a model for youth development and community collaboration.

The effort also sparked broader interest. Reed Jewelers has committed to returning as a sponsor at a higher level next year, and Muscogee County School District Superintendent officials expressed enthusiasm about expanding student participation to additional high schools.

Organizers say the initiative underscores the importance of connecting young people with real-world experiences that inspire academic achievement and long-term success.

“This was more than a moment,” Justine Boyd UNCF Assistant VP said. “It was an investment in the future.”
