Time-Out: Summer Heat, Champions Rise
Isaiah Crowell, former Carver High School star, has been selected for induction into the 2025 Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame.

Summer is officially in full swing, and across the tri-city area, the energy is electric. While school may be out, local athletics are far from taking a break. From impressive championship performances on the gridiron to major coaching announcements and Hall of Fame honors, this past week has proven that winning seasons never really end — they just change uniforms.

We begin in Russell County, where the Warriors added yet another title to their growing résumé. Competing at Jacksonville State University, the Warriors captured the 7-on-7 championship in dominant fashion. After rolling through early opponents Temple and Anniston, they lined up for a high-stakes championship bout against powerhouse Auburn. The spotlight was no problem for incoming senior quarterback Bryson Riggins, who delivered a clutch performance with three touchdown passes in the final game, showing composure, accuracy, and command. Riggins was locked in, and his ability to spread the ball around and make plays under pressure set the tone for a Warriors team that looks poised to carry that momentum into the fall.

The 7-on-7 circuit has become an essential part of the off-season for programs looking to sharpen their playbooks and develop team chemistry, and Russell County made a statement — they’re not just participating, they’re ready to dominate.

Speaking of 7-on-7, the spotlight now shifts to middle school competition. The Muscogee County School District is gearing up for the return of its Border Wars Middle School 7-on-7 Flag Football Tournament, presented by Arnold Magnet Academy. This second-year event brings some of the region’s top young athletes to the field in a competitive, fast-paced showcase of skill and strategy. Hosted at Odis Spencer Stadium, this tournament is a celebration of youth development and regional pride — and this year, it’s expanding in a big way. For the first time ever, GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL will be part of the tournament lineup, reflecting the explosive growth of the sport and the demand for equal playing opportunities.

🗓 Girls Tournament – June 24, 2025
🗓 Boys Tournament – June 26, 2025
🕓 Time – 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
📍 Location – Odis Spencer Stadium, 4150 Cusseta Rd, Columbus, GA
🎟️ Tickets – $6 via GoFan (No cash sales)
🚨 Reminder: All students must be accompanied by an adult – no exceptions.

The inclusion of girls in the Border Wars tournament is more than a scheduling update — it’s a testament to how Muscogee County continues to lead the charge in youth sports innovation. As the first flags are pulled and the first touchdowns are scored, expect these young athletes — boys and girls alike — to show just how bright the future of football is.

Meanwhile, St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School made headlines this week with the announcement of a new era for their track and field program. Coach Detra Rosser, known to many as Coach D, has been promoted to Head Coach of the High School Track & Field Team. A product of Carver High School and a former standout at Albany State University, Coach D is a respected figure both in Columbus and beyond. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, personal growth, and performance — not just on the track but in every area of life. She brings deep experience, a strong track record of mentorship, and an unshakable belief in her athletes. Her appointment reflects Pacelli’s commitment to excellence and continued investment in elevating its athletics department. And the good news for the Vikings doesn’t stop there.

Austin Danison, a senior baseball standout from Pacelli’s Class of 2025, became the 15th student-athlete from his class to commit to playing sports at the next level. Danison will be heading to Fort Myers Baseball Academy in Florida, securing a $20,000 scholarship to continue his baseball journey. Known for his work ethic and team-first mentality, Danison’s success is a credit to his dedication and the strength of the Pacelli baseball program. While Danison prepares for a collegiate career, another Columbus legend is being honored for a legacy already carved into the history books.

Isaiah Crowell, former Carver High School star, has been selected for induction into the 2025 Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on October 25th at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, where Crowell will be enshrined among the state’s all-time greats.

Crowell’s high school career was nothing short of historic. As a senior in 2010, he rushed for 1,721 yards and 18 touchdowns on just 147 carries, following a junior campaign with 1,915 yards and 25 touchdowns. He finished with a staggering 4,872 career rushing yards, cementing his place as one of Georgia’s most decorated prep athletes. Recognized with honors such as AJC’s All-Classifications Player of the Year, GACA North Georgia Player of the Year, and AJC Super 11, Crowell was the consensus No. 1 running back recruit in the nation. He went on to play at the University of Georgia, where he was named SEC Freshman of the Year, before transferring to Alabama State and later playing in the NFL.

Crowell’s story is a Columbus story — one of talent, triumph, and the power of opportunity. His Hall of Fame induction is not only a personal achievement but a moment of pride for the entire Carver community and the city as a whole. From the rising heat of 7-on-7 matchups to the legacy of Hall of Fame inductees, the Tri-City area continues to deliver unforgettable moments in sports. As summer unfolds, expect even more stories of excellence, leadership, and inspiration. Stay tuned.
