Time-Out: A Coaching Era Ends, A Hometown Hero Returns
G.W. Carver High School proudly introduces Jarvis Jones as its new head football coach! A standout member of the 2008 Carver Tigers state championship team.

This past week in Columbus was nothing short of historic as two powerhouse high school programs made headlines—one with a surprising leadership change and another inching closer to a state title. Throw in a city-wide basketball league kickoff and a pair of soccer and baseball postseason thrillers, and it’s clear that local sports in the Fountain City are alive and thriving.

Pierre Coffey (Pictured on the left) has officially stepped down after leading the Tigers to a Georgia Class AA state championship last season....

It all started with a stunning announcement from G.W. Carver High School. Coach Pierre Coffey, the man who led the Tigers to the Georgia Class AA football state championship just last season, officially stepped down from his role as both head coach and athletic director. His departure, though unexpected, marks the beginning of a new chapter—not just for him, but for the program he helped turn into a powerhouse.

Coffey, who has spent eight seasons coaching in the Columbus area, leaves behind a legacy of leadership, excellence, and growth. Across three programs, he amassed an impressive 68-28 career record. In just three years at Carver, he compiled a dominant 34-7 overall mark, including a blistering 16-1 record in region play. His teams were known not only for their discipline and physicality but also for how they represented the city with pride and poise.

He’s not moving far from leadership, though. Coffey is set to become the principal of Stewart County’s K-12 school. His hiring was approved Tuesday night by the Stewart County School Board. It’s a major move for a man who has long been admired not just for his football acumen, but also for his character and commitment to youth development. Stewart County gains not only an administrator, but a mentor and motivator.

What followed that resignation was a twist few could have predicted but many are already celebrating. In a bold and emotional move, Carver tapped one of its own to lead the program into its next era—Jarvis Jones. To longtime fans of Columbus football, the name carries heavyweight status. A star of Carver’s 2007 state title team, Jones went on to earn national attention at the University of Georgia after beginning his college career at USC. He was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, cementing his journey from Columbus standout to NFL linebacker.

Jones went on to be a star at the University of Georgia before being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jones was born in Columbus and raised in Lumpkin and Richland. He not only left his mark as a football player but was also an all-state basketball athlete. Ranked as one of the top high school prospects in the country, Jones played in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and built a collegiate and professional resume that few local athletes can rival.

Now, he returns—not just to coach, but to inspire. His hiring isn’t just symbolic. It’s strategic. It signals Carver’s intent to maintain a culture of excellence while leaning into the roots of its tradition. With Jones at the helm, the Tigers aren’t just reloading—they’re rebranding with legacy in mind.

While Carver’s football program was in the midst of reshuffling the deck, the spotlight also turned toward Brookstone School, where their athletic program continues to flourish across multiple sports. The Brookstone Cougars baseball team clinched a spot in the state championship, marking their second appearance in three years. They edged past Tattnall Square Academy in a gritty 2-1 semifinal win that had fans on the edge of their seats.

Brookstone Cougars baseball team have advance to their 2nd State Championship in 3 years.

The Cougars didn’t dominate with bats—they grinded it out with defense, timely hitting, and smart base running. With the win, Brookstone improved to 26-6 on the season, while Tattnall slipped to 24-8. It was another testament to the winning culture being fostered by Coach Greg Mathis, who has quietly built one of the most consistent programs in Georgia. Brookstone will now prepare for the state championship game to be held at Synovus Park in Columbus, with date and time still to be announced. One thing is for certain: Cougar Nation will be out in full force.

And Brookstone wasn’t done making headlines. Their girls’ soccer team added even more excitement to the school’s week by punching its ticket to the state title game as well. The Lady Cougars edged Stratford Academy 2-1 in a tightly contested match. It was their third straight win—each coming by just a single goal—and their defense has been phenomenal, allowing only one goal over that entire stretch. Now sitting at 10-7, this team has battled adversity all season long and is peaking at just the right time.

Their final test will come against the top-ranked St. Anne-Pacelli Lady Vikings in a matchup scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Pacelli enters the championship game red-hot after dismantling Bulloch Academy 4-0 in the semifinals. The Vikings improved to 14-2-1 on the year and have scored a staggering 21 goals in their last three matches. Addie Christenson led the way with a pair of goals in that semifinal win, while Isabella Ramos and Gely Torres also found the back of the net. For Brookstone, it’s a David-versus-Goliath storyline. But if recent games have proven anything, it’s that this team knows how to win when it counts.

FFC Christopher Horton was named the Player of the Game, finishing with 18 points and 6 rebounds.

And as high school sports dominate the spring spotlight, local adults are also getting in on the action. Columbus Parks & Rec officially tipped off its Adult Basketball League—known as “Night Ballers”—this past Saturday. The opening night delivered high energy, big performances, and an early favorite in FFC, who rolled to a 73-48 win over the Knights. Christopher Horton stole the show, dropping over 18 points and earning Double Coverage’s Player of the Game honors.

With 10 teams in the league and games scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Shirley B and Psalmond Road Rec Centers, Night Ballers promises to be a highlight of the summer season. The competition is intense, the community is engaged, and the atmosphere is everything you want from a grassroots hoops league.

As the sports scene in Columbus continues to evolve, one thing is clear—this city is brimming with talent, leadership, and passion. From young athletes chasing championships to seasoned pros returning home to lead, the heartbeat of local sports is stronger than ever.
