Shakea Miller, founder and dean of 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College in Phenix City, has been named the 2025 recipient of the President’s Award, presented annually by the Courier Eco Latino newspaper.
Named in honor of the publication’s president and publisher, the award recognizes individuals who have overcome adversity and obstacles to achieve success while inspiring and uplifting their community.
Miller, a dynamic leader in both business and education, made history in June 2024 when she became the first African American woman in Alabama—and only the sixth nationwide—to open a degree-granting technical college. Her institution provides accessible trade and theological programs designed to serve underserved communities, creating pathways to economic mobility and spiritual growth.
Her journey has been marked by resilience. From facing the challenges of being a young mother to earning multiple certifications and ultimately founding her own college, Miller has demonstrated perseverance and a commitment to purpose.
