The Carl “Brother Love” Hardman Activist Award Recipient: Mel Long

Many people are known for “speaking truth to power,” but few truly understand what it means. Carl “Brother Love” Hardman was one of those rare individuals who walked it like he talked it. He didn’t tell you what you wanted to hear—he told you what you needed to hear.

From 2009 until his passing in February 2021, “Brother Love” served as a contributing columnist to this publication, using his voice to challenge injustice and inspire change. Each year, we honor his legacy with an award recognizing an individual who shares his passion for community activism.

This year, we proudly present the Carl “Brother Love” Hardman Activist Award to Mel Long.

For more than 30 years, Long’s business in Phenix City, Alabama —Mel & Abe’s Barbershop—has been more than a place for a haircut. Since opening in 1992, it has been a trusted community hub and a catalyst for political and social change in South Phenix City.

A dedicated civic leader, Long has supported local political candidates by organizing public forums and fundraisers, fostering direct engagement between residents and elected officials. He helped establish a local think tank dedicated to community progress and is a regular presence at Phenix City Council meetings, where he advocates for development and revitalization.

As president of Citizens for Unification of Revitalization and Economic Development, Long has also championed health awareness initiatives, promoting preventive care through screenings and wellness events.
