The 6/24 Project is Complete and the Columbus Airport Ready to Reopen

A Q&A With Amber Clark, Airport Director, Columbus Airport (CSG)

As holiday travel ramps up and Columbus gears up for one of the busiest seasons of the year, the newly reconstructed Runway 6/24 at the Columbus Airport is officially back open. We sat down with Amber Clark, Airport Director for the Columbus Airport, to talk about the project, community impact, and why flying from CSG is more convenient—and more valuable—than many residents realize.

Q: Amber, how long have you been with the Columbus Airport, and how did you get here?

Clark: I’ve actually been here about 10 years. I started as the FBO Manager over the general aviation side, and about seven years ago I became Airport Director. I’m passionate about aviation—I really fell in love with it. And yes, I’m a pilot myself.

Q: Are you originally from Columbus?

Clark: No, I’m from Kennesaw, Georgia—just north of Atlanta. But Columbus has truly become home.

Q: Let’s start with the headline—Runway 6/24 is officially reconstructed. What does this completion mean operationally for the airport?

Clark: It means our main runway is stronger, more durable, and ready for heavier aircraft. The old runway was asphalt, which is more flexible. The new one is concrete—more rigid and long-lasting. It reduces maintenance needs and is simply a better long-term investment.

Q: What was the total cost of the project, and how was it funded?

Clark: The project cost $24 million. It was funded through a combination of federal and state grants, along with a small portion of local TSPLOST funds.

Q: Your reopening announcement started with “Did you miss us? Because we missed you.” How intentional was that focus on community connection?

Clark: Very. This airport exists to serve the community, so we made sure people knew what was happening before reconstruction, during the project, and all the way through. We created an entire landing page to answer questions and keep the community informed.

Q: You’re reopening right as holiday travel picks up. How prepared is the airport to meet the increased demand?

Clark: We are absolutely prepared. Our terminal is fully operational, TSA and our airline partners are ready, and our rental car partners are staffed and available. We’re excited to welcome travelers back.

Q: What are the biggest advantages of flying from Columbus instead of driving to Atlanta?

Clark: There are several:

  • Shorter TSA lines
  • Cheaper, closer parking
  • No long walks or shuttle rides
  • Less time required—you don’t need to arrive 3–4 hours early
  • Personal service

Here, you’re not just a ticket. You’re a neighbor. We’re here to serve you with a personal touch.

Q: Airports are economic engines for cities. How does this new runway strengthen Columbus’ competitiveness?

Clark: This runway’s strength and longevity position us for future growth—larger aircraft, potential cargo expansions, increased military operations, and opportunities to attract additional airlines. It’s a major win for Columbus’ long-term economic development.

Q: How many flights currently operate between Columbus and Atlanta?

Clark: We currently have three daily flights.

Q: What safety or technology upgrades came with the reconstruction?

Clark: The runway was completely rebuilt. New storm drains were installed underneath, new LED runway lighting and signage were added, and we installed a blast pad to protect the ground during engine run-ups. It’s a safer, more modern surface across the board.

Q: What role did local contractors play in the project?

Clark: Our primary contractor was from Valdosta, but they hired numerous subcontractors—including several local ones. We were happy the project created opportunities here at home.

Q: The airport has seen several improvements recently. What’s next?

Clark: Next up is a renovation of our general aviation terminal and improvements to our rental car wash area. We’re also preparing for our 20-year Master Plan, which includes significant community engagement. We want residents’ input on the airport’s future.

Q: What message do you want Columbus residents to hear now that the runway is open and the airport is fully operational?

Clark: Try CSG first.
Yes, we know cost matters—but consider the real cost: gas to Atlanta, wear on your car, hours in traffic, hours in line. Your time is valuable. Your convenience matters.
