Three Men Sentenced to Life for 2024 Murder of Columbus Teen
Staff Report Three men have been sentenced to life in prison for the 2024 shooting death of 16-year-old Dennie Henderson
For many girls who walked through the doors of Girls Inc. of Columbus & Phenix-Russell, the center at 4637 Kolb Avenue was more than just an after-school program — it was a launchpad. For Denice Lytle, it was where she discovered her voice, her confidence, and her purpose.
Today, that same facility bears the name The Dorothy Hyatt Center, honoring the legacy of Dorothy Hyatt, a former executive director and Girls Inc. alumna whose decades of service helped strengthen, protect, and empower generations of young women. Hyatt’s leadership and vision laid the foundation for the life-changing work that continues today.
Although Lytle now resides in Tennessee, her connection to Girls Inc. of Columbus & Phenix-Russell remains strong. She chairs the organization’s Alumnae Association Committee, serves on the National Girls Inc. Alumnae Association Council for a three-year term, and frequently drives from Tennessee to Auburn University home football games to volunteer at concessions to raise funds for Girls Inc. programs.
She also participates in board meetings, fundraisers, and events — giving her time, talent, and treasure to the organization that once gave her a sense of belonging and empowerment.
“Denice Lytle exemplifies everything we want for every Girls Inc. girl — a confident, accomplished woman who uses her voice and gifts to create positive impact in the world,” said Danita Gibson Lloyd, CEO of Girls Inc. of Columbus & Phenix-Russell. “When our alumnae return as board members, committee chairs, and volunteers, they show every girl within our walls what is possible.”
Professionally, Lytle is an English Language Arts teacher known for designing innovative lessons aligned with Common Core Standards, collecting achievement data, and fostering strong relationships with students and parents. Beyond the classroom, she operates her own business as a mobile notary signing agent and works as a content writer and organizational support specialist, developing curricula, surveys, and training materials.
Her career, grounded in service and leadership, reflects the core values instilled in her during her formative years at Girls Inc.
“Girls Inc. taught me that confidence is power and that service is leadership,” Lytle said. “I am who I am today because someone invested in me.”
Her story underscores the enduring impact of Girls Inc. — an organization that has shaped lives and strengthened communities for more than 70 years.
Girls Inc. of Columbus & Phenix-Russell continues to invite the community to invest in the next generation by giving their time, talent, or treasure:
