State Rep. Teddy Reese Announces Bid for Georgia Senate Seat Being Vacated by Ed Harbison

Teddy Reese has announced his intention to run for the Georgia State Senate seat being vacated by longtime lawmaker Ed Harbison, setting the stage for what could become a closely watched race in West Central Georgia.

Reese, a Columbus attorney and Democrat who currently represents District 140 in the Georgia House of Representatives, confirmed that he plans to seek the District 15 Senate seat following Harbison’s recent announcement that he will retire after more than three decades in the Georgia Legislature.

Harbison, first elected to the Senate in 1992, has represented communities across the Chattahoochee Valley and surrounding counties since 1993. His retirement closes one of the longest tenures in the chamber and opens a seat that has long been influential in shaping policy affecting the region.

Reese, who was elected to the state House in 2022, succeeded veteran legislator Calvin Smyre, the longest-serving member of the Georgia General Assembly. Reese said his decision to seek the Senate seat reflects a desire to continue building on the legacy of leadership that has represented the district for decades.

“As Senator Harbison prepares to conclude an extraordinary career of public service, I believe this is a critical moment for our community,” Reese said. “I am committed to continuing the work of advocating for strong schools, economic opportunity, and policies that improve the quality of life for families across this district.”

Born in Gordon, Georgia, Reese now resides in Columbus and is the principal owner and managing attorney of The Reese Firm, LLC. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Albany State University, a master’s degree in public administration from Georgia College & State University, and a law degree from Florida A&M University College of Law.

Before entering elected office, Reese served in several community leadership roles, including chair of the Community Development Advisory Council for the City of Columbus.

Georgia Senate District 15 includes portions of Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties and several surrounding counties across West Georgia. The race is expected to draw significant attention as candidates position themselves to succeed Harbison’s long-standing influence in the region.

Reese said his campaign will focus on strengthening economic development, supporting education, and ensuring the Chattahoochee Valley continues to have a strong voice under the Gold Dome.

Reese joins Senator Harbison's son, Ed D. Harbison who announced his intent earlier today.
