Registration Opens for World AIDS Day 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run

Registration is open for the World AIDS Day 5K and 1-mile Fun Run, sponsored by the Columbus (GA) Alumnae Chapter, the Columbus Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter and the Theta Phi Chapter (Columbus State University) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., along with community partners.

The event is set for Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Shirley Winston Park, 5025 Steam Mill Road. The family-friendly program will feature health and wellness vendors, free HIV testing and resources, giveaways and activities for all ages. Event T-shirts are available for purchase through Nov. 21.

Proceeds benefit the West Central Georgia Health District’s Ryan White Program, which provides primary medical care and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS, including antiretroviral therapy, counseling and nutrition education.

Organizers say awareness efforts have advanced significantly, but continued support is needed for individuals managing HIV and AIDS. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, modern treatments have made HIV far more manageable than in past decades, and most people who take daily HIV medication can achieve undetectable viral levels within six months, leading to life expectancies comparable to those who are HIV-negative.
