PHENIX CITY MAYOR'S BALL AWARDS MORE THAN $137,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO 60 STUDENTS

Sixty graduating seniors from Central High School, Russell County High School and Glenwood School received college scholarships Thursday through the Phenix City Mayor's Ball Scholarship Program, continuing a 13-year tradition of investing in local students pursuing higher education.
Scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 were awarded during the ceremony, with more than $137,000 distributed to this year's recipients.
The scholarship program was established 13 years ago by Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe and his wife, Deborah Lowe, through the annual Phenix City Mayor's Ball. The event raises funds to help area students offset the cost of attending college while encouraging academic achievement and community involvement.
Yolaunda Daniel, chair of the Phenix City Board of Education and president of the Phenix City Mayor's Ball Committee, credited the program's continued growth to strong community support.
"It has grown each year because we've had the community get on board and support our students, and they know the value and importance of an education," Daniel said.
Since its inception, the Phenix City Mayor's Ball Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships to students throughout the community, making it one of the region's most significant privately funded scholarship initiatives.
Organizers said the program remains committed to expanding educational opportunities and helping local students achieve their academic and career goals through higher education.
