The Muscogee County School District paid tribute Thursday to the remarkable career and legacy of Miss Juanita Carson Booker, dedicating its counseling and social work department in her name. The honor coincided with Booker’s 95th birthday.
Booker, who spent 46 years in education, became the district’s first director of guidance and counseling and was instrumental in establishing elementary school counseling services. She also served as director of guidance services for 20 years, shaping policies and programs that supported the academic, emotional and social growth of thousands of students.
Her journey began in Reynolds, Georgia, where her family instilled values of education, independence and faith. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Albany State College, a master’s degree from Fort Valley State College and a specialist degree from Auburn University.
Booker began her career as a classroom teacher, serving 12 years before transitioning into leadership roles. Beyond her work inside schools, she was active in civic and community advocacy, mentoring generations of students and educators.
The decision to name the department in her honor received unanimous approval from the school board. District leaders said the recognition not only celebrates Booker’s pioneering contributions but also serves as an inspiration for future counselors and social workers.
“Miss Booker’s legacy is one of compassion, vision and unwavering commitment to young people,” Superintendent Dr. David Lewis said. “This tribute ensures her influence will continue to guide us for years to come.”
The dedication highlights the district’s broader effort to honor educators whose impact extends well beyond the classroom, reminding the community of the power of service and leadership in shaping future generations.
