Meet Lift Her Up Awardee: Pauline I. Johnson

Pauline I. Johnson’s lifelong commitment to service has helped strengthen institutions, uplift neighborhoods and preserve community legacy throughout Columbus and the Tri-City area.

Johnson moved to Columbus at age 13 when her father, Master Sgt. Paul A. Ingram—later First Sgt. Ingram—was stationed at Fort Benning. After his retirement, the family made Columbus their permanent home. Johnson attended Marshall Junior High School and graduated from William H. Spencer High School in 1970 before continuing her education at Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee.

A devoted woman of faith, Johnson is an active member of New Birth New Beginning Church under the leadership of Pastor Claudett Moss. She faithfully serves in several capacities, including usher, announcer and publicity coordinator, while also assisting wherever needed. She also serves on the board of the church’s Beginning New Outreach Program, which provides clothing, food and school supplies to families in need.

Johnson’s leadership is also widely recognized through her work with the William H. Spencer Alumni Association, where she serves as parliamentarian. She helped popularize the phrase “Greenwave Nation,” spearheaded the Owl Walk of Fame brick paver project at Spencer High School and founded the William H. Spencer Scholarship Fund.

Her service has earned numerous honors, including the Nathaniel Carter Award, the NAACP Margaret Jenkins Legacy Award and the AARP Unsung Heroes Award.

Grounded in faith and community pride, Johnson continues to lead with humility, vision and a steadfast commitment to serving others.
