The annual breakfast, held before a full house, continued a decades-long tradition of honoring King’s legacy through service, scholarship and community unity. Proceeds from the event support scholarships for local students while recognizing individuals and organizations that promote cooperation and progress across racial, economic and social lines.

Dawkins, is best known as the founder and longtime director and chairperson of the Gertrude “Ma” Rainey House and Blues Museum, a cultural landmark dedicated to preserving the legacy of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, widely known as the “Mother of the Blues.” A retired educator with the Muscogee County School District, Dawkins now serves as a community liaison and has spent decades advocating for the recognition of Rainey’s musical genius and historical significance.

Her leadership was instrumental in saving Rainey’s childhood home and developing it into a museum that celebrates Columbus’ blues heritage and educates new generations. Dawkins’ advocacy has earned national attention, including special recognition connected to the Grammy Awards for her work promoting Rainey’s legacy. She is also active in community organizations such as Georgia STOMP, supporting educational and cultural initiatives across the region.

Event organizers praised Dawkins for her steadfast commitment to honoring local history and using culture as a bridge to unity. “Her work reflects the spirit of Dr. King’s message — lifting community, preserving truth and creating opportunities for learning and connection,” organizers said.

This year’s featured speaker was Herman “Skip” Mason Jr., a nationally respected civil rights leader and pastor known for his faith-based activism and community empowerment. Mason delivered remarks emphasizing service, unity and the ongoing responsibility to translate King’s ideals into action.

The Unity Award Breakfast has become a signature Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance in Columbus, drawing civic leaders, educators, clergy and residents together each year to reflect on progress and recommit to shared community goals.
