Tri-City Latino Festival Canceled for 2025 Due to Economic Challenges
Organizers of the Tri-City Latino Festival announced that this year’s event, originally scheduled for Sept. 20 in downtown Columbus,
Irma Mason's vision for GIM Transportation Services LLC began with a simple observation: formerly incarcerated individuals often struggle to maintain employment due to transportation barriers.
Mason, a local entrepreneur, founded the company in December 2024, targeting workers in Columbus and West Point, particularly those employed at nearby factories like Kia or Hyundai. The business name combines her grandson's name (Gianni) with her own initials.
"My cousin lost three jobs because he couldn't consistently get to work," said Tanya Williams, 35, a Columbus resident. "Something like this could have changed everything for him."
Local resident Marcus Johnson, 48, shared a similar perspective. "Transportation is the silent killer of second chances. Most people don't realize how hard it is to rebuild when you can't even get to a job interview."
Mason offers weekly rates starting at $90 for Kia workers, with daily rates of $40. "We want to be safe, timely, and customer-friendly," Mason said. Her primary goal is to reduce recidivism by providing reliable transportation to job sites.
Despite facing numerous regulatory challenges, including complex state licensing requirements, Mason remains committed to her mission. As a woman veteran business owner, she was inspired after hearing stories from families struggling to support loved ones rebuilding their lives.
"This service could be a game-changer for families in our community," said Sarah Thompson, 52, a longtime Columbus resident. "It's not just about transportation, it's about giving people a real chance to start over."
While currently operating with one van, Mason hopes to expand services, potentially including transportation for low-income individuals and prison family visits in the future.
"It's not about getting rich," Mason emphasized. "It's about providing a critical service to help people rebuild their lives."
