I Don't Know About You, But I'd Rather Live Like There Is a God

I once heard someone say, "I'd rather live my life like there is a God and find out there isn't than live my life like there isn't a God and find out there is." The older I get, the more wisdom I find in those words.

Now before somebody starts sending me theological position papers, let me explain. Life is full of risks. We buy insurance hoping we'll never need it. We save for retirement hoping we live long enough to enjoy it. We carry umbrellas because the weather forecast said there was only a 20% chance of rain. So when it comes to faith, I don't see believing in God as a bad investment.

You see, faith has never been about having every answer. Faith is about trusting God even when you don't understand every question. It is about believing there is a purpose greater than yourself, a power greater than your problems, and a promise greater than your pain.

If I spend my life believing in God, loving my neighbor, forgiving those who hurt me, helping those in need, seeking justice, showing mercy, and trying to live according to His Word, what have I really lost if, in the end, there is no God? I would have lived a life filled with hope, compassion, purpose, and peace.

But if I spend my life convinced there is no God—rejecting His guidance, ignoring His voice, and living as though I am accountable to no one but myself—only to stand before Him one day and discover that He is real, then the price of that mistake is far greater than anything I ever hoped to avoid. For some risks are temporary, but the consequences of missing eternity are everlasting.

From my seat in the pew, faith is not a gamble—it's a foundation. It gives meaning to suffering, strength during storms, and confidence when the road ahead is uncertain. It reminds me that my life is more than a collection of random events. I am here by divine design and for a divine purpose.

The truth is, every one of us is betting our lives on something. Some put their faith in money. Some trust in power. Some believe only in themselves. As for me, I'll continue putting my trust in the One who woke me up this morning, carried me through yesterday, and promised never to leave me nor forsake me.

Because if I'm wrong, I've still lived a life guided by love, hope, and purpose. But if I'm right, I've gained eternity. And that's a wager I'm willing to make every day of my life.
