Forum Aims to Empower Columbus Tenants Facing Poor Housing Conditions

With reports of substandard housing continuing to surface in the Columbus area, local media outlets and legal advocates are teaming up to educate residents on their rights as tenants.

Davis Broadcasting, The Courier Eco Latino newspaper, and The Foster Firm will host a “Tenants: Know Your Rights” community forum on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Girls Inc., Baker Center, 3535 Levy Road, Columbus. The event will also be broadcast live on K92.7 FM and WOKS AM 1340 / 94.1 FM.

The forum comes amid growing concern over unsafe living conditions and the lack of strong tenant protections in Georgia. Organizers say the event is designed to provide residents with tools to fight back against negligent landlords and learn where to seek help.

“Too many families are being forced to live in unsafe or unhealthy conditions because they don’t know their rights,” said Geniece Granville vice president and general manager of Davis Broadcasting, Inc. “We want to change that by giving people knowledge and access to resources.”

The expert panel will include attorneys Arnise and Kieth Foster, Realtor Adrian Chester, housing advocate Tanya Bachelor, and community leader Pat Frey, among others. Panelists will outline tenants’ legal rights, discuss how to hold landlords accountable, and clarify the responsibilities of both tenants and property owners.

Sponsors of the event include K92.7 FM, WOKS, The Foster Firm, and The Courier Eco Latino newspaper.
