A View From A Pew: Let Them Find Their Own Path
There comes a moment in every parent’s journey when we must face a hard truth: our children do not
Editorial Note: Far too often, when people of color are arrested in our community, they are denied the presumption of innocence. Their character is quickly impugned through rumors, gossip, and innuendo, with their pictures splashed across the front pages of newspapers and leading newscasts. Yet when they are exonerated, there is little to no acknowledgment—no apology, no front-page correction. At best, such news is relegated to a brief mention buried deep inside the paper.
As the lone Black- and Hispanic-owned news source in this community, we are committed to telling the full story. That is why we proudly publish the following statement, which was received from Mr. McNeill’s attorney:

Statement from Attorney Jennifer Dunlap regarding Mr. Maurdrice McNeill
Today, nearly one week after media and school district reports of his arrest, all charges against Hardaway High School Principal Maurdrice McNeill have been officially dismissed. He has been fully cleared after the first possible hearing of the case by court officials.
Mr. McNeill asked that I publicly share how difficult this past week has been for his family as he endured personal attacks and a very public rush to judgment on social media. Under the advice of counsel, he made no statements or responses. He did not defend himself, but instead trusted in the system to deliver justice. Today’s decision speaks for itself. He wants his supporters to know that it was his relationship with God that saw his family through this painful and challenging
time.
I can assure everyone that Mr. McNeill feels an even stronger commitment to his community and is choosing to focus on his future. While on leave, he prayed continuously and spent time with his wife and children. He trusts that God uses all things, even tribulation for a greater purpose.
To those who stood by him during this difficult time— he says “thank you... the support, prayers, and encouragement meant more than words can express.”
