Don't Question Your Worth — Question Where You Are!

Don't Question Your Worth — Question Where You Are!

I heard something the other day that made me stop, think. A bottle of water costs $1 at the grocery store. That same bottle of water costs $3 at the gym, $5 at the airport and $7 on an airplane.

Now, somebody help me understand something. It's the SAME water! Same bottle. Same ingredients. Same purpose. Nothing about the water has changed. The only thing that changed was its LOCATION! And because its location changed, so did the price people were willing to pay for it.

I wish somebody would catch that this morning! Because some of you have spent too much of your life questioning your value simply because you've been surrounded by people who don't recognize your worth.

You've been giving your best to people who only acknowledge your mistakes. You've been pouring into people who never pour back into you. You've been showing up, standing up, lifting up and holding up people who wouldn't even reach down to help you when you fall.

And after a while, you started believing that because they didn't appreciate you, maybe you weren't worth appreciating. But I've stopped by to tell somebody: Just because they don't recognize your value doesn't mean you have none! Sometimes you're not the problem. Sometimes you're just in the wrong place.

You see, that bottle of water doesn't have to change its ingredients to become more valuable. It doesn't have to change its label, change its shape or apologize for being water. It simply has to be placed in an environment where somebody recognizes its usefulness.

And that's a word for somebody who's been trying to change who they are just to fit into places where God never intended them to stay. You've been shrinking yourself to make other people comfortable. You've been dimming your light because somebody else couldn't stand your shine. You've been apologizing for your gifts because somebody else was intimidated by your greatness.

Stop discounting yourself just because somebody else is shopping for a bargain! Everybody who has access to you won't appreciate you. Everybody who sits at your table won't celebrate you. And everybody who walks beside you isn't necessarily walking in the same direction. Sometimes the people closest to you are the very ones who have become so accustomed to your presence that they've forgotten the blessing of having you around.

That's why Jesus said in Mark 6:4 that a prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives and in his own house. Even Jesus understood what it meant to be unappreciated in familiar surroundings.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm not suggesting that you should walk around thinking you're better than anybody else. Because humility is still a virtue, and pride still comes before destruction. But there is a difference between being humble and allowing people to humiliate you. There's a difference between serving others and allowing yourself to be used. And there's a difference between knowing your place and allowing somebody else to convince you that you don't have one!

That bottle of water doesn't become more valuable to God because somebody charges $7 for it instead of $1. Its ability to quench thirst hasn't changed. And neither has yours! Your worth was never determined by what somebody was willing to give you. Your worth was established by the God who created you!

Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Not accidentally made. Not cheaply made. Not mistakenly made. Wonderfully made! So why are you allowing people who didn't create you to determine your value? Why are you allowing somebody who doesn't know your struggle to define your success? Why are you allowing people who weren't there when you cried yourself to sleep to tell you what you deserve when morning comes?

Sometimes God has to move you out of familiar surroundings because you've become too comfortable being undervalued. Sometimes He has to close a door because you keep begging for acceptance in a room where you were never meant to remain. And sometimes that rejection you've been crying about is actually God's redirection! Because what you thought was somebody pushing you away may have been God pushing you toward something greater.

That job that didn't appreciate you. That relationship that drained you. That friendship that only existed when somebody needed something. That organization that benefited from your gifts but never acknowledged your contribution. Maybe, just maybe, God is saying, "You've been here long enough. It's time to move!"

And here's what I love about that bottle of water. It doesn't argue with the grocery store about being worth more. It doesn't get angry because the gym charges more. It doesn't become jealous of the bottle sitting on the airplane. It simply remains what it was created to be. Water! And wherever it goes, it still has the ability to satisfy somebody's thirst.

That's your assignment, too. Keep being kind. Keep being faithful. Keep being generous. Keep being compassionate. Keep walking in your purpose. But learn that you don't have to keep pouring yourself into places that leave you empty.

And understand that changing your environment doesn't always mean changing your address. Sometimes it means changing your circle. Changing your boundaries. Changing your expectations. And sometimes it means changing the way you see yourself. Because you can move to another city, find another job or enter another relationship and still carry the same low opinion of yourself. A new location won't help if you keep carrying an old mindset!

So before you ask God to change your circumstances, ask Him to help you recognize the value He has already placed inside you.

Let me leave you with this. The next time somebody overlooks you, don't automatically question your abilities. The next time somebody rejects you, don't automatically question your purpose. The next time somebody fails to appreciate you, don't automatically question your worth.

Maybe you're not worthless. Maybe you're not inadequate. Maybe you're not asking for too much. Maybe you've just been standing in a place where people have grown accustomed to receiving something precious for next to nothing.

And remember this: Even when nobody is willing to pay a dollar for that bottle of water, it still has the power to quench somebody's thirst. Your value is greater than your price tag. Your purpose is greater than your present circumstances. And your future is greater than the opinions of the people who failed to see your potential.

So stop begging people to recognize what God has already declared valuable. Stop trying to prove your worth to people committed to misunderstanding you. And stop allowing temporary rejection to make you forget your eternal identity.

Because sometimes the greatest change in your life doesn't happen when you become somebody different. It happens when you finally find yourself in a place where you can be everything God created you to be.

And if you don't remember anything else I've said, remember this: DON'T QUESTION YOUR WORTH. QUESTION WHERE YOU ARE!

And when God opens the door to your next season, don't be afraid to walk through it. You were never created to spend your whole life on the discount shelf!
