The NAACP Columbus, Georgia Branch hosted its 51st Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, drawing a sold-out crowd to the Columbus Convention and Trade Center.
Held under the theme “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” the evening served as a celebration of service and a call to action in support of civil rights and community engagement. The banquet began at 7 p.m. at the convention center, located at 801 Front Ave.
The featured speaker for the evening was Michael Thurmond, who delivered remarks emphasizing the continued need for civic participation, accountability, and unity in addressing present-day challenges.
During the program, the Columbus Branch recognized several individuals and organizations for their contributions to faith, advocacy, leadership, and community service:
· Religious Leadership Award — The Rev. Albert McCorvey Sr. Award was presented to Rev. Emmit Aniton Sr.
· Corporate Appreciation Award — Aflac was honored for its corporate support and community engagement.
· C.A. “Brother Love” Hardman Community Activist Award — Presented to Rev. Richard Jessie.
· Corrine Walker Appreciation Award — Presented to Eva Smith.
· Margaret Jenkins Legacy Award — Presented to Brenda Perryman.
· President’s Award — Presented to Jerome Williams.
· Dr. Thomas H. Brewer Award — Presented to Isaiah Hugley.
The Freedom Fund Banquet is the Columbus NAACP’s signature annual fundraising and recognition event, supporting the organization’s ongoing work in advocacy, education, and social justice throughout the community.
Organizers said the strong turnout and broad community support underscored the continued relevance of the NAACP’s mission and the enduring urgency reflected in this year’s theme.
