Columbus Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta to Host Suicide Awareness Event

Every 11 minutes, someone in the United States dies by suicide, making it one of the nation’s leading causes of death. In observance of Suicide Prevention Month, the Columbus Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated will partner with the Delta Life Development Foundation and Line Dancers Unlimited to host an evening of awareness and hope.

The event, “Suicide Awareness, Stepping for Hope,” will take place Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at Warehouse 9, 920 9th St., Columbus. It is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to wear yellow — a color that has become a national symbol of suicide awareness since the 1994 death of 17-year-old Mike Emme, whose family and friends used yellow ribbons to spread a message of hope.

Marilyn Graham, LPC CMAC, CPCS, will lead the program with insight on how to recognize warning signs, respond effectively, and connect individuals with critical resources. In addition, Line Dancers Unlimited will offer a beginner’s class for a $10 fee.

“Suicide impacts every community,” said Brenda Williams, president of the Columbus Alumnae Chapter. “This event is about education, prevention, and bringing people together in solidarity and hope.”
