Columbus Airport to Close Primary Runway for Four-Month Reconstruction Project

Columbus Airport to Close Primary Runway for Four-Month Reconstruction ProjColumbus Airport (CSG) will suspend all commercial, corporate, and military flights for nearly four months as its primary runway undergoes a full reconstruction, officials confirmed this week.

Runway 6/24, the airport’s longest and most heavily used runway, will close from Aug. 5 through Nov. 27, 2025, to allow for a complete replacement—the first since the airport opened in 1944.

The $40 million project will address widespread signs of deterioration, including cracked pavement, storm drainage failure, surface depressions and structural displacement. Though currently safe for aircraft operations, the runway has exceeded its typical 40-year lifespan. Routine crack sealing is usually done every three to five years, with more extensive rehabilitation occurring about every decade.

Funding for the project will come from federal, state and local sources. The reconstruction aims to strengthen the airport’s infrastructure and allow for larger commercial aircraft operations in the future.

During the closure, all commercial and military flights will cease, including the airport’s three daily Delta Connection flights. The last bookable Delta flights to or from Columbus are available through Aug. 4, 2025, according to airport officials.

Preliminary closures related to the project will begin in March 2025, with full shutdowns expected to last approximately 100 days.

Opened in 1944, Columbus Airport has served as a regional hub for both civilian and military air traffic. The reconstruction of Runway 6/24 marks a significant milestone in modernizing the facility.
