Columbus City Council District 7 candidate Chris Kelley is expected to announce his withdrawal from the municipal race during a scheduled press conference Friday afternoon, according to campaign officials and sources familiar with the situation.
Kelley is set to make the public announcement at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Citizens Services Center, 3111 Citizens Way, where he is expected to address supporters, community leaders and members of the media regarding the future of his campaign.
While campaign representatives have described the event as a “major campaign announcement,” multiple sources close to the campaign indicate Kelley plans to formally step aside from the District 7 contest.
Kelley entered the race seeking to represent District 7 on the Columbus City Council, a seat that has drawn heightened political attention ahead of the upcoming municipal election cycle. His anticipated withdrawal could significantly reshape the race as remaining candidates continue organizing support throughout the district.

District 7, which includes approximately 20,225 residents, is one of the city’s more diverse council districts. Demographic data shows the district population is approximately 67.8% Black, 24.5% White, and 10.1% Hispanic. Despite its majority Black population, the district has never elected an African American representative to the Columbus City Council.
If Kelley’s withdrawal is confirmed, the race would narrow to two remaining candidates: Marquese “Skinny” Averett and Rebecca Zajac, both of whom have continued outreach efforts across neighborhoods within the district.
Political observers say the development could alter campaign dynamics as candidates work to consolidate voter support in advance of the election.
Friday’s press conference is open to the public and media. Additional details regarding Kelley’s decision and its potential impact on the District 7 race are expected following the announcement.
