The Alabama Department of Corrections recently graduated the largest class ever,
with 144 graduates.

State officials attribute this success to increased correctional officer starting salaries, weekly hiring events, targeted recruiting and improved workforce partnerships.

“At the Alabama Department of Corrections, we believe in rewarding hard work. With competitive salaries, multiple salary raises, cost of living and annual merit increases, your dedication doesn't go unnoticed. Our Correctional Officer Trainee starting salaries are $58K or $28 per hour, plus you can earn up to almost 30 percent more within the first two years with advanced training,” said a statement on its website.

Currently, the department is partnering with the Alabama Community College System, including Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City. The partnership offers a no-cost pathway to a career as a correctional officer, helping individuals who may face physical or educational barriers meet the necessary standards.

In order to graduate from the academy recruits must complete 10 consecutive weeks of training to obtain Alabama Peace Officers’ Standard and Training Commission certification to become correctional officers.

The Alabama Department of Corrections is the largest law enforcement agency in Alabama with 28 facilities and nearly 2,000 officers.

The ADOC is actively recruiting for a variety of security and non-security positions at all of its correctional facilities statewide, including at the medium security Bullock Corrections Facility located in Union Springs, roughly 52 miles from Phenix City, and the medium security Easterling Correctional Facility, located in Clio, roughly 72 miles from Phenix City.
